I must defer to Craig's superior knowledge, of course, but my understanding is that the doctrine of precedent doesn't apply to the plea deal because the court in question merely performed a procedural formality by accepting the guilty plea, which involved no consideration of any factual or legal issues. Precedent, as I understand it, only applies where the factual and legal issues have been tried. Even so, the resulting conviction wouldn't be binding given that this was a first-instance court. To be binding, the decision must have been upheld on appeal (which would have involved a consideration of the legal issues), thus making it binding on the lower courts. I'd also be keen to hear from someone else about Assange's travel restrictions, for if he's been convicted of a felony (leaving aside the grotesque travesty of it all), many countries might not allow him entry unless under some kind of waiver.

People often claim that the outcome of any court case "sets a precedent", or at least they claim that when we like the result. In fact, precedent is set only at appeal level or higher. All you get at first instance is "persuasive authority" which another court at the same level is free to ignore if that's what they decide.
